"Awesome. Inspiring and magical."
Spectator

Glow is a spectacular after-dark multimedia event with a HUGE difference.

Massive images, contributed by local people and artists, are projected on to monumental urban surfaces - flats, office blocks or landmark buildings - transforming them into incredible works of constantly shifting art.   Glow taps into the emotional lives of people who live or work behind the walls on which the projections shine, illuminating their stories outside in the city.

Glow is the creative vision of artist Nathalie Vin.   She sources the visual narrative from scores of people where the event takes place - from neighbours, artists and businesses. Residents reveal their most precious treasures - photographs, objects, artworks - sharing their stories and lives to create a spectacular collective event. Nathalie orchestrates the project, contextualising images contributed by the community within her own artistic framework.   This collective energy gives Glow a creative life of its own, which has a powerful impact on both passers by and those who take part.

The Glow project aims to alter people's lives and perspectives through bringing them together and enabling them to celebrate individual creativity and experiences in a shared setting.

Through a mesmerising visual event, using the latest projection technology, Glow directs the light at "us", making "us" the main actor of our own story.

How do people react?

"I live in Adelaide Crescent and I was touched and moved that the project was taking place here. It gave me a great feeling of involvement.   I adored seeing everyone's images on such a large scale, it made the most intimate moments seem larger than life."
Participant

"Within 5 minutes of the Glow project starting, I was in a better mood, it was uplifting and moving."
Spectator

Through light, Glow bonds communities, neighbours, and passers-by. An ordinary residential or corporate building becomes an animated spectacle of light and sound. Just as the campfire brought people together in ancient times to exchange stories, Glow offers an illuminated canvas for people to explore their own community, their own lives, and ultimately, the life of their city.

"Glow is a product of "holographic thinking" - just as holographs use light to conjure three dimensional images from flat surfaces, with Glow, each slide selected gains meaning from the place it occupies within the whole event.   Glow is unified by the harmonious, continuous movement of many parts.   It represents an order of relations and exchange between individuals and the city, between personal and public environments."
Glow creator, Nathalie Vin

The Observer Argus This is Brighton

Glow has been piloted at three locations in Brighton and Hove in 2003 - The Royal Pavilion, during the Cine City film festival; Adelaide Crescent, a sweeping seafront Regency square; and Kensington Place, a quiet residential street.    Crowds of 2000 people braved November wind and rain to watch in Adelaide Crescent. Each event generated extensive coverage in local media as well as national titles including The Observer.

"It shows the neighbour we never saw before, the structure of the façade that no one could describe before, or simply the unexpected creation of some light reflections, unifying spectators in similar dimensions of pleasure and beauty. Artists and technicians are rendering a forgotten soul to the city."

"I couldn't believe it when I saw myself projected onto a building - it is a very strange feeling.   I loved seeing everyone's pictures.   It was like nosing through a photo album - fantastic."
Participant

"The fact that so many people came on such a foul evening is proof of the project's success in being both stimulating and genuinely participatory."
Spectator

"I thought the event was fantastic despite the rain.   We watched for about 45 minutes and thoroughly enjoyed it."

"The involvement of the local communities in the projects was equally successful as the stunning projections for the audience.   Images of Nathalie's work in the city have since been used in a wide range of publicity and marketing materials outside of the scope of the projects.   The imagery has captivated audiences beyond those who took part as participants or audience directly."
Paula Murray, Head of Arts and Creative Industries, Brighton & Hove City Council

Glow offers the corporate sector the chance to engage with people on an emotional level. The project's sensitive approach is an opportunity to adapt a memorable medium to communicate with large numbers of people   - offering a powerful and positive interruption to the increasingly isolated nature of urban life. Transforming the ordinary into something extraordinary, Glow can light up a city, linking strategic locations over a series of events.   Glow can amplify your message, attract media attention, create a talking point with lasting impact in the memories of thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds.

Glow could make an unusual contribution to:

  • your community development programme
  • your marketing strategy - generating positive PR, media attention,   potential competitions for people to exhibit work and offering media buying opportunities
  • your arts development strategy, offering a large number of local artists and musicians the opportunity to showcase their work in spectacular style

Glow is made possible through its partnership with E\T\C UK Ltd, who provides the technical expertise and technology. The projection technology used are the most advanced and powerful in the world to date   - adapted from aerospace research.   E\T\C UK Ltd is the specialist company responsible for the stunning projections on Buckingham Palace for the Queen's Golden Jubilee and onto London's Shell Centre for the British Legion's Poppies Appeal.

Each projector (and many projectors can be cascaded together) can project images 40m by 30m onto buildings such as Buckingham Palace at a brightness of 50,000 lumens (which is, per square meter, 25 times greater than that of an ordinary board-room projector).

"I called my son in Australia on my mobile to tell him he was missing a wonderful evening."

"As an individual, Nathalie engages communities and audiences directly and with ease.   As an artist and project director, she has a clear vision for her work and is able to translate that into reality for large scale audiences"
Paula Murray, Head of Arts and Creative Industries, Brighton & Hove City Council

Nathalie Vin is an experienced project director with an extensive creative background and the ability to investigate, win and manage projects across a variety of markets. She is fluent in several languages and experienced in working with a panel of parties involved in event management including commercial, government, cultural and media organisations in the UK and abroad.

She developed the concept of Glow and manages the artistic project from start to finish, including liaising with authorities, individual residents and their associations, artists and the media and securing in kind sponsorship.   For the Glow pilot events, Nathalie oversaw the design and distribution of all promotional material including a DVD.

Nathalie's vision, integrity and powers of persuasion have proved successful in securing the use of Brighton's Grade I listed Royal Pavilion (brands and creative media had never before been projected on to the Pavilion), the cooperation of the city council and the trust of hundreds of residents and artists.

She has also organised a large scale projection for Croydon Borough Council for the Holocaust Memorial Day .

Nathalie has been nominated for The Argus "Achiever of the Year" Award.

The Glow Project is also proud and happy to have on board, Ross Ashton, the artist behind the monumental backdrops...

Ross Ashton has had the privilege to create projected artwork for buildings around the world...

"I want to reinterpret architecture with images and light so that the viewer sees it in a new way.  When Glow approached me to be involved with the project I was very excited at the vision that was brought in this event.

I could see that the idea was very interesting. I liked the idea of bringing people together through the experience of sharing images.  Glow to me is about allowing the public to decide what images are important to them, and allowing them through the medium of projection to share those images with other members of their community.  In this way, each person that contributes has those experiences translated into an event that is literally on a monumental scale".
